Is It a Good Time to be an Online Entrepreneur?

This post is for my friends and readers who are wondering if now is the time to come online and start a business blog. I was asked this question several times during the Holidays as people contemplated their 2010 plans.

To get right to the point – YES! I actually believe that there is no bad time to start a business if that is what you desire, just get started and build it over time to what you want it to be.

Some general thoughts

It’s been a bumpy two years (2008 – 2009) for the global economy, as you no doubt have heard from the constant parade of talking heads on the daily blues news.

History has once again repeated itself and the cycle will be complete when the economy stabilizes and moves more consistently toward the positive.

This of course will not happen until the entrepreneurs of the world join forces and lead the way back, as has happened so many times before.

You see, economic prosperity never started with Dow Jones on Wall Street, but with Sam Jones on Main Street. Long before there were large corporations there were small businesses, started and operated by entrepreneurs who saw a need and decided to fill it.

History has shown us that whenever times got tough and there was economic uncertainty, people began to look within, grabbing hold of that creative spirit and finding a way to make ends meet. Simply put, when jobs dried up they made their own.

We are witnessing that very same thing today, as difficult times once again provide a necessity to create opportunities.

Today’s internet is loaded with opportunities as witnessed by the thousands of blog launches that occur daily. For the first time in history the average business person can compete with large multinational corporations since the startup fee for an online business is well within the reach of most.

As a business owner, you can reach as many people online as the large corporations through the smart use of social media. This leveling of the playing field positions you to carve out a niche.

The internet has exploded

In the year 2000, there were 360 million people on the internet, according to Today there are 1.7 billion global users and growing. The sheer numbers tell you that opportunities are everywhere.

The importance of working together

Back in the day shopkeepers all worked together and looked out for one another for the betterment of the entire community. Today’s business climate is no different, with the exception of those who only care about themselves and are missing the larger picture.

This approach increases the chances for additional opportunities like joint ventures and project collaborations that otherwise may be more difficult to find individually. Working together within a community of bloggers brings about a collective knowledge that benefits everyone involved.

There has never been a better time to launch an online business. With a blogging education, a business plan and a strong desire to reach your goals the end result is totally in your control.

I would remove the curiosity of what might or could be and begin the journey of building your online enterprise.

Jimi has hit the key point on the head – working together. When I first started I was just another blogger, posting away with no real networking aims or direction, just plod, plod, plod. Over the last four months or so my personal network has grown and so has my readership.

Blogging collaboration, through the likes of Twitter 12, or any other group, has to be a priority for anyone thinking of starting a blog.

I think it is a good time, but a very challenging time. In this Dog eat Dog world, you can’t stand by yourself. Networking is the key.
As Kevin says, join some networking communities like Twitter12 and blogengage. Network, share, get help, help others.

We should be looking out for each other. Community and friendship is the key I think.

Nothing can beat word of mouth. Your friends become m friends, and their friends, and so on.

You and Kevin both are the exact type of individuals to network with. I have surely enjoyed working with you guys and the entire Twitter12 group for that matter.

It is a matter of surrounding yourself with positive people, exercising that law of attraction thing.

You are correct about the dog eat dog types, but they are easy to spot and avoid.

I agree entrepreneurship is the way to go; the problem is many have been raised with the mindset to go out and work for someone trading time for money and that is a hard habit to break.

Also the people their lives are of that same mentality and they cast a negative light on not having a job working for someone else and keep track of entrepreneurial failures and ridiculed and make statements that an entrepreneur is just a lazy person that doesn’t want to work.

I think until that stereotype gets bashed fledgling entrepreneurs will never truly strike out on their own to create their own wealth.

I hope that anyone that wants to become and entrepreneur reads your post and gets out there and just does it.

You are so right on that mindset issue. Anytime you do something different you are automatically tagged as a rebel or different.

It is too bad that so many creative people will miss out on great opportunities because of the daily peers pressures applied at home and in society in general.

Thanks for the visit, we will see you soon.

Great tips, Jimi, I think if everyone were to know about the opportunities on the internet the world would be a happier place and there would be less complains :).

Welcome Shirley, it is good to have you visit.

I agree, if the population in general would change their attitudes and recognize that yesterday’s workplace model is playing out, things could be much better overall.

How long before all of those millions of jobs lost over the past couple of years return?

The question is rhetorical of course, but people will find themselves in very bad situations awaiting the return to the “good ole days”.

    Hi Jimi,

The internet, despite amazing growth in recent years, is still very much in its infancy not only in terms of numbers but also possibilities.

Certainly a good time to become an “Online Entrepreneur” in my opinion but, having said that, it seems to me that the “failure rate” for new ventures in the internet is destined to always be incredibly high due to the number of people who will enter the arena unprepared and with unrealistic expectations. The barriers to entry are just so low for internet start-ups – and the road to success is much longer than most “internet newbies” will be prepared to take.

In short – an “easy option” that isn’t an “easy option” … but definitely I think a “good option” for those with creative ideas, the necessary skill sets & persistence

Hey Will, how are you my friend?

You summed it up perfectly. Many think this is a cake walk which leads to the high failure rate.

This is the long haul type of project.

    Hey Marikxon, how goes friend?

Turning that knowledge into information products is a great online business model. Of course there is much more to it than that, but following a strategic plan is what works for success.

    Good to see you. ;-)
