Developing Greater Focus

By Jimi Jones

After many months of blogging I have begun to see a clearer picture in terms of where this thing will end up. It’s not that I was unclear of my focus; it’s just that things are clearer now than ever before.

The business side of blogging requires a ton of work in terms of building your foundation and installing all of the proper tools and systems you need for your blog to function as you envision.  And although there is likely a greater amount of work ahead, you begin to hit a stride.

Once you’ve established your business plan and a set of rules to keep you moving forward things seem more manageable.

A word of caution here, it is so easy to become distracted with all of the information available on the internet today that without a detailed action plan, you may find yourself in the non-productive zone. That’s when you’ve worked for many hours and really accomplished nothing as you went from one task to another.

This is why the development of a greater focus is a key ingredient to your overall success as a blogger. Many have this type of focus naturally and can easily incorporate the blogging lifestyle into their everyday routine. Others will have to find this ability and the sooner you can accomplish this, the better.

One thing that I have begun to do more of is actually write about the experience of becoming a professional blogger. I think giving an insider’s view as things develop along the journey to the pro level is something that can be very helpful to others who may be experiencing some of the same issues and growing pains. This may strike a chord with some, letting them realize that they aren’t the only ones experiencing the learning curve.

I started this particular blog in March of this year (2009) with a broad focus of covering various online businesses, blogging and technology. As I wrote article after article, it became clear to me that I was more interested in blogging about blogging itself. After all, blogs did start out as journals or Web logs so detailing your experiences on a particular subject is a natural.

As part of this natural progression, my focus has sharpened to a point where I can see a very wide business plan now. The ability to break down all of the components are much easier seen today than a few months ago. This is really starting to be fun on a level greater than I expected for this given point in time.

So no matter where you are in your blogging career, particularly first year individuals, you absolutely must develop a laser-like focus to 1, be successful and 2, to keep this as the fun-to-do undertaking that you intended.

Blogging requires a tremendous amount of work and it’s not for everyone, but for those who love to be involved with life online, this makes the challenges worth the reward.
