The Blogging Life – Building Your Brand, Part 2

By Jimi Jones

In this follow-up post to Part 1 of Building Your Brand, I will cover some specific methods for getting the job done.

One of the most popular ways to establish your brand is to join social media sites and networking groups. Choose groups and forums of like-minded individuals where there is commonality and similar goals.

I’ve found that people in general are willing to help or provide vital information to others who are striving to reach a level of success in a shared niche. I guess it’s the better side of human nature that shines through when people share an ideology.

Here are some other methods for establishing your brand;

  • Get involved in blogging – Yes, the obvious. Blogging is a really cool and effective way of sharing your expertise while building relationships in your particular niche. You can exponentially expand your visibility, thereby establishing a brand. The search engines look favorably upon blogs due to their relative content and continual updates. Launching a blog is a serious commitment, requiring 3 to 5 posts each week. Link to other relevant blogs by mentioning them in some of your posts. This may result in a positive development from a more seasoned blogger, which in turn may enhance your overall traffic.
  • Participate in online forums – Forums are also a great place to increase your visibility and establish relationships. You may be surprised at the level of knowledge within a forum, and the amount of education you can receive by the interaction with other participants. Very valuable tool, which should not be overlooked or taken lightly.
  • Observe your competition – By studying your competition you can determine what makes you different and what you need to do to stand out from the crowd. This can be a very powerful learning experience that may set the tone for your advancement.
  • Think ahead – What goes online stays online. To avoid unanticipated consequences you should carefully think through the processes and methods you utilize to build recognition. You never want to place yourself in a position of having to walk something back. Once you’ve hit the button, you’re on the record.
  • Remain active – Keeping your visibility high is critical to building you brand. Set a schedule for visiting forums and blogs that you comment on, so that a level of consistency develops. People will come to expect to see you in certain places, just like the real world. This again points to the importance of the overall commitment required for your success.
  • Contribute to the cause – As bloggers our content is our product and marketing tool, so if you have valuable content, or something valuable to add to a particular conversation, by all means share this with others. This will go a long way toward branding you as a person who has value to add and you’ll be remembered for it.
  • Expand your footprint – You must be in many places to become a recognized contributor to life online. Establish a network of “outposts” all over the social community with each leading back to your blog. Yes this takes time to build and manage, but the results will be well worth the effort.
  • Be for real – I talked about this in the previous post, but it is important to repeat. The social network is not a place to be phony, trying to be someone you are not. In the end, you will only fool yourself and once you’ve been uncovered as an imposter, you’re finished.

Building a brand is nothing more than building a reputation. Do you want to garner a reputation as a person not to be trusted, or a trustworthy individual who always provides something of value to each situation?

We all want to be socially accepted and favorably viewed by the masses but this doesn’t come automatically. The unsavory undercurrent of scammers and spammers has caused most people to take a wait and see attitude, or in many cases become totally distrustful of many individuals.

This is why you have to build your brand over a period of time. The long haul is what will best illustrate your worth to the online world and without a positive brand, success will escape you.
