Scams – The Fleecing of a Global Population

By

As I open this series of articles related to scams I wonder when I will write the last installment. When you really think about it, fraudulent and deceptive practices seem to multiply by the minute. Advancements in technology bring on new tools that will be utilized to relieve others of their hard earned funds. The techniques often change but the basic premise remains the same, somehow make you believe that you are getting a good deal without raising your suspicions.

Practitioners of this deceit probably consider themselves professionals and many make fortunes doing nothing but running these operations. Bernie Madoff is the latest and most visible evidence of this type of person but the real widespread damage is done by the smaller under-the-radar operators. Many of these scoundrels have never worked a day in their lives, thinking only of how to pull off the next score.

Scams are like cancer, no one is immune and there is absolutely no discrimination as it attacks society at all levels and in all places. Newspaper ads, television infomercials and door-to-door salespeople represent a percentage of scammers, but nowhere are scams more prevalent than today’s internet. Now I should point out that all of the previously mentioned sources of advertisements for sales are mainly populated with legitimate individuals trying to make an honest living. The bad actors represent only a small slice of the overall business community, but they leave the most lasting impression.

The act of moving money from one pocket to another under false pretenses has probably been around since the development of banking in Babylonia around 3000 BC. Precious metals and grain were the currency of the day and you can be sure that someone was relieved of more than they had planned because of what the other person promised and failed to deliver.

Today we have those 3:00am infomercials that have the greatest advances in medicine using all natural ingredients that only they know how to mix. There is the government money that is being given away free to a good home. Why should I pay for free money? The vacuum that will clean your house overnight and have breakfast ready when you awaken. Well, I may be starting to sound a bit far afield but have you ever wondered why these ads run at 3:00am when most folks are asleep?

This series will take an in-depth look at many of these business practices designed to have you voluntarily transfer money to someone else for next to, and in many cases, absolutely nothing. There is so much to cover in this underhanded industry that it does not matter where you start, the end result is always the same. There is one simple reason why there are so many scams going on, and that is because they continue to work.

Were you really expecting to start making $10,000.00 per month just weeks from now for the small fee of $39.00? Has anyone ever made $2 million dollars doing data entry? Why would you pay a company to hire you so you can make a fortune and turn your life around? You’ve all heard or seen the promises. There is this guy pitching a system that will make you rich on autopilot for just $97.00. He stands there with the Ferrari’s and Mercedes Benz’s in the background telling you how he made $18 million dollars in the last six months. So why would he need your $97 bucks?

This all sounds silly, but it is a major problem as many people are struggling big-time and have hopes of buying their way out. Emotions drive them to make a bad decision and by the time they realize it, their wallets have lost considerable weight.

In the next SCAM article, I will examine the inner workings of a case study. Until then, don’t buy that bridge in Brooklyn. :-)
